Practical considerations of the use of cortisone and ACTH in rheumatoid arthritis.

چکیده
The original and subsequent reports concerning the clinical effects of cortisone and ACTH (Hench and others, 1949; Thorn and others, 1949; Freyberg, 1950; Thorn and others, 1950a, b, and c; Sprague and others, 1950; Hench and others, 1950) clearly indicate that these hormones have profound effects in the human, producing great benefit on various rheumatic states so long as the hormone is administered, and that these effects cease soon after the administration of the hormones is discontinued. In acute illnesses, such as attacks of gouty arthritis or acute rheumatic fever, administration of these hormones can be expected to benefit the patient greatly, and on account of the short periods of administration there is little or no difficulty from undesired physiological effects of the hormone-producing complications. In chronic illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis, greater difficulties surround the use of cortisone and ACTH, for it is evident that the underlying disease process is not eliminated by a short period of administration, and prolonged vigorous use may produce serious side-effects. The practical problem, therefore, is: How can cortisone or ACTH be effectively and safely used in patients with chronic rheumatoid arthritis ?

متن کاملInvestigation of the relation between the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, IL-6 and hyperalgesia during chronic inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in male rats.
Introduction: The activity of Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis is increased following inflammation due to its closed relation with immune system. This axis indicates an increased secretion of ACTH, and corticosterone during acute inflammation while little is known about its activity during chronic inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study we measured the products...
متن کاملRheumatoid nodules; a study in their pathogenesis and the effects of cortisone and ACTH.
The dramatic remissions occurring in rheumatoid arthritis during the adminis-tration of cortisone or ACTH are now familiar observations. In addition to the -volume of clinical and biochemical data already collected, there have been reports describing alterations in the pathological changes of the joint lesions with the use of these drugs. When one of our first cases to receive cortisone showed ...
متن کاملAmyloidosis in rheumatoid arthritis treated with hormones.
Experimental evidence suggests that treatment with cortisone orACTH increases the rate of accumulation of tissue amyloid. Thus Teilum (1952) has shown that mice previously treated with casein in doses insufficient to cause amyloidosis accumulate amyloid quickly in the spleen after a small number of injections of cortisone. Latvalahti (1953) has confirmed this observation and has shown that mice...
